Mahindra & Mahindra is aggressively challenging Maruti Suzuki in India’s rapidly growing utility vehicle (UV) segment. Mahindra is aiming to surpass Maruti in the segment, with the gap between the two companies’ sales significantly narrowing. The difference in sales between the two companies was 53,500 units in the initial four months (April-July) of fiscal year 2025. This difference decreased to only 12,700 units during the same period this year. Notably, the gap was reduced to a mere 2,900 units in July.
If this trend continues in the coming months, Mahindra & Mahindra could regain its lead after nine years. The company, known for its Scorpio and Thar models, is increasing production to meet growing demand, thereby reducing waiting times for customers. Maruti Suzuki, renowned for its small cars like the Wagon R and Swift, has maintained its top position in the UV segment since fiscal year 2018, leveraging older-generation SUVs such as the Vitara Brezza and multi-seater Ertiga. Mahindra & Mahindra led the segment until fiscal year 2017.
