In recent years, North Gujarat has rapidly emerged as a prominent automobile manufacturing hub in India. This transformation is largely attributed to Suzuki Motor Gujarat, whose factory in Mehsana has a production capacity of approximately 750,000 cars annually. The plant plays a significant role not only in the domestic market but also for exports, according to an official statement. Suzuki has announced the establishment of a fourth production line, investing around ₹3,200 crore. This new line will focus on the production of electric vehicles. This investment is part of a larger strategy, with the company already committed to a ₹7,300 crore battery plant and a ₹3,100 crore EV manufacturing unit.
Gujarat attracted several major automobile companies between 2012 and 2015. The turning point came in 2014 when Suzuki signed an agreement with the state government to establish a mega plant. Since then, the company has made substantial investments, generating employment for thousands and fostering the rapid development of an auto component ecosystem. Today, Suzuki Motor’s Gujarat plant is considered one of the largest automobile production centers in the country. Gujarat’s strong port connectivity has also made it a crucial export hub. In 2024, vehicles worth approximately ₹3,459 crore were exported from here to countries like South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Japan, UAE, and Chile. The state government is now preparing to showcase these achievements at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conferences (VGRC), presenting new opportunities to global investors in the Gujarat automobile sector and related sectors. Overall, Suzuki’s increasing investment and emphasis on EV production are poised to usher in a new era, not only for Gujarat but also for the entire Indian automobile sector.
