Former US President Donald Trump has been criticized for making false claims regarding tariffs imposed by India. He stated that India levies the highest tariffs globally while the US allows Indian goods into its market without restrictions. Trump alleged that high tariffs compelled companies like Harley-Davidson to leave India. However, this claim is inaccurate.
Harley-Davidson’s departure from India was not due to tariffs. The company initiated operations in India in August 2009, with its first dealership opening in 2010. Initially, Harley imported its bikes but later began assembling some models in the country. Despite this, Harley-Davidson ceased its sales operations in India in 2020. The reason for leaving India was not related to tariffs.
