Despite the dominance of SUVs in the Indian market, a sedan has carved a significant niche for itself. The Volkswagen Virtus has secured the title of India’s best-selling premium sedan in 2025. Remarkably, it held the same position in 2024, marking a second consecutive year of dominance for the Virtus.
From January to August 2025, the Virtus recorded a total sale of 13,853 units, reflecting a growth of approximately 9 percent compared to the previous year. In the premium sedan segment, sales reached 37,575 units from January to July, with the Virtus accounting for 33% of the market share. This means that one in every three buyers chose the Virtus. The ex-showroom price of the Volkswagen Virtus ranges from approximately 11.56 lakh to 19.40 lakh, varying based on the variant and city.
The Virtus has outperformed its main competitors. Popular cars like the Honda City and Hyundai Verna are still favored by customers, but their sales figures haven’t matched those of the Virtus in recent months. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki’s Ciaz has faced a challenging period, with zero units sold in August 2025, contrasting with 707 units sold in the same month the previous year.
The growing demand for the Virtus in the Indian market can be attributed to its design, performance, and safety features. Customers in this segment are seeking cars that fulfill everyday needs while also providing an enjoyable driving experience. This is why the Virtus is gaining an edge over other models.
The Virtus is available with two petrol engine options:
* A 1.0-liter TSI engine that generates 113 bhp of power and 178 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox.
* A 1.5-liter TSI engine that delivers 148 bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque, offered with a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
In an era where SUVs are rapidly gaining popularity, the Virtus’s success is noteworthy. While Honda City and Hyundai Verna maintain their presence, the Virtus has revitalized the sedan segment.
