48,000 Crore Thermal Project Expected to Boost Assam's Power Capacity and Jobs

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited's 3,200‑megawatt ultra‑supercritical thermal power plant in Chapar, Dhubri district on September 20. Valued at approximately 48,000 crore rupees, the venture stands as one of the most significant private investments in the state's timeline.

The plant is slated to raise Assam's electricity generation capacity sharply while delivering a large wave of employment opportunities. Adani Power estimates that up to 20,000 temporary jobs will be created during the construction phase, followed by roughly 5,000 permanent and indirect positions once the facility is fully operational.

The event saw participation from senior state officials, industry delegates, community leaders, and Adani Group director Jit Adani. The Chapar thermal project forms a pivotal segment of the Adani Group's broader 63,000‑crore‑rupee investment plan for Assam's power sector.

Commissioning is planned in multiple phases beginning December 2030, featuring four 800‑megawatt units that employ ultra‑supercritical technology designed for higher efficiency and modern environmental safeguards.

In his address, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted Assam's growing stature as an energy hub for the Northeast and cited the project as a tangible outcome of the "Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0" commitments. He emphasized that the 48,000‑crore investment ranks among the largest single‑investment commitments ever made in the state.

Jit Adani described the plant as a new chapter in Assam's development narrative, promising jobs and business opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, and entrepreneurs. He also noted that the Adani Group's cumulative investments across power, aviation, and cement sectors have already exceeded 80,000 crore rupees, many of which are now taking shape on the ground.
