AI University Plans Unveiled in Karnataka Amid Tech Push

Karnataka chief minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Tuesday the state’s intention to establish India’s first publicly funded artificial intelligence university. The announcement took place at the launch of Google I/O Connect India 2026 within the Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre.

The upcoming university will focus on creating world‑ready AI experts, fostering high‑impact research and strengthening the partnership network among universities, industry players and governmental agencies. In addition, an AI Hub will be launched to act as a research and development incubator, providing a shared space for startups, corporations, academic institutions and innovators to fast‑track AI‑centric solutions.

Shivakumar described AI as the most transformative technology of the present era, equating its impact with historic breakthroughs such as the steam engine, electricity, the internet and mobile communications. He stated Karnataka’s goal of joining the global cadre of responsible AI centres, highlighting Bengaluru’s role as a leading international innovation ecosystem, not merely India’s technology capital.

The state contributes roughly 40 % of the nation’s software export output, and Bengaluru hosts over 17,000 startups along with numerous global capability centers that deliver technology products to worldwide markets. The government’s vision is to render Karnataka an AI‑native state where AI permeates public administration, delivering better teaching, quicker disease detection, smarter agricultural guidance, faster citizen services and greater resilience for small businesses.

Key priorities include scaling up data‑centre capacity, building hyperscale computing infrastructure and expanding the research ecosystem. Shivakumar praised Google for situating Bengaluru among its major global engineering, research and innovation hubs and urged deeper collaboration to create AI solutions for education, health, agriculture and good governance, while supporting startups and enhancing learning opportunities for students.

He concluded by calling on developers, entrepreneurs, researchers and students to push forward innovation and adopt lifelong learning, assuring that Karnataka will shape the future of technology while keeping AI innovative, inclusive and reliable.
