BRICS Summit Strengthens Global South Voice Through Energy and Maritime Talks

The BRICS summit held on September 12‑13 in New Delhi placed a spotlight on the priorities of the Global South. Energy security and maritime safety were high on the discussion table, reflecting the shared challenges of member and partner countries.

Delegates examined ways to enhance cooperation in renewable energy, secure supply chains for critical resources and protect vital sea lanes. These initiatives aim to reduce dependence on external powers and build a resilient framework for South‑South collaboration.

Indrani Talukdar noted that the emphasis on collective security and sustainable development strengthens the bargaining power of emerging economies in global forums. The summit’s outcomes are expected to feed into broader discussions at the United Nations and other multilateral bodies.

The gathering featured leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Iranian President Masoud Pejashki, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, UAE Crown Prince and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi.

With roughly half of the world’s population and about 30% of global output represented, the BRICS bloc continues to be a decisive factor in shaping international trade, which accounts for one‑fifth of worldwide commerce.
