Credit Expansion Outpaces Deposit Rise as Rural Savings Grow

According to the same SBI Research report, credit growth is set to stay ahead of deposit growth throughout FY27. The June quarter saw credit increase by 18.6 per cent YoY, while deposits rose by 13.3 per cent, creating a 5.3‑percentage‑point spread that the analysts attribute to structural changes after COVID‑19.

The widening gap is linked to a new savings geography: semi‑urban and rural areas are adding fresh deposits, reflecting higher household earnings, welfare schemes centred on women, and a widening banking network. At the same time, urban savers are reallocating funds to market‑linked products, which reduces the share of deposits in the banking system but fuels credit demand.

Regulatory curbs on unsecured personal loans have also freed up credit capacity, allowing banks to focus lending on industry, infrastructure, working‑capital needs, and gold‑backed loans under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (SCLGS).
