Dr. Jitendra Singh: Pension Reforms Make Life Easier for India's Retirees

In a candid address at the 16th All India Pension Adalat in New Delhi, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh celebrated a decade of transformative reforms in India's pension ecosystem. What was once a cumbersome, paperwork-heavy process has now become a seamless, digital-powered service focused on pensioners' respect and convenience. Held at the iconic Vigyan Bhawan, the adalat tackled longstanding grievances, resolving 74% of 985 pending cases from across 37 ministries. Key highlights included on-the-spot presentations of 26 complex matters, predominantly from Defence (12 cases), Home (8), and Railways (2). Pensioners from diverse regions participated actively—eight in person from far-off Akola and Haldwani, and 18 virtually from Mandi, Bikaner, Kolkata, and Erode. This pan-India participation underlines the growing effectiveness of these forums. Financial relief was substantial: one pensioner received over Rs 74 lakh, while two others got Rs 46 lakh each. Dr. Singh detailed the journey since 2014, when digital tools like Jeevan Praman's biometric verification revolutionized life certificate submissions, reducing hassles dramatically. Family pension norms have been liberalized, eliminating archaic rules for missing individuals, streamlining claims for divorced daughters and judicially separated ones, and extending benefits to differently-abled dependents. The minister stressed a shift towards empathetic, efficient administration under PM Modi's vision. Pension adalats, launched in 2017, boast a stellar track record: 19,948 resolutions from 27,812 cases across 15 events, with 71.72% success rate. Officials were directed to prioritize outcomes over procedures, ensuring pensioners—nation's experienced contributors—receive dignified support without delay.
