Female Workforce Participation Improves Slightly, Rural Gains Lead

New Delhi – The National Statistical Office's August 2026 bulletin highlights a modest rise in women's labour force participation. The overall female LFPR reached 34.8 percent, up by 1.1 percentage points from the same month a year ago.

Rural women's participation was the main driver, climbing to 39.4 percent from 38.8 percent in July. In contrast, urban female participation held steady at about 25.4 percent, showing little movement.

Overall LFPR for the country ticked up to 55.6 percent, while the rural LFPR for all ages rose to 58.2 percent, 1.2 points above the August 2025 level. Urban LFPR stayed at 50.4 percent.

The broader worker population ratio improved to 52.8 percent, the highest since March, with rural WPR at 55.8 percent, up 1.3 points. Unemployment remained at 5.0 percent nationally, and rural unemployment fell to a low of 4.1 percent since January 2026.
