Food Safety Concerns Rise as EU Turns Back Pakistani Rice Shipments

The latest refusal by the European Union to accept a Pakistani rice shipment has sparked fresh debates on global food‑safety standards. According to a report by the Lisbon Post, the primary reason for the rejection was the detection of pesticide residues above the EU's maximum residue limits (MRLs). The EU's testing laboratories also identified the presence of aflatoxin in certain batches, a carcinogenic toxin that can form when grains are stored in damp conditions.

EU regulations mandate that each food import be sampled and analyzed; any product failing to meet the stringent limits is denied entry and either returned to the exporter or destroyed. The report highlighted additional shortcomings, such as incomplete documentation, poor traceability, mislabeling, and failure to comply with sanitary and phytosanitary requirements.

Food‑safety experts stress that, while price is an important factor, it should never override compliance with health standards. They recommend that countries like Bangladesh, which are considering imports from Pakistan, conduct independent laboratory analyses on every shipment to verify that pesticide residues, aflatoxin levels, heavy metals and other contaminants are within safe limits.
