Future of Basmati Farming in Jammu Strengthened by New Research Initiatives

The Basmati Rice Research Centre at Chakroi received a high‑level review from SKUST Vice‑Chancellor Prof. B.N. Tripathi, who stressed the centre’s role in shaping the future of basmati cultivation in Jammu.

Tripathi observed the integration of precision agriculture tools, including satellite‑linked field monitoring and automated irrigation systems, designed to enhance water‑use efficiency for basmati paddies. Researchers presented data on ongoing breeding programs that incorporate marker‑assisted selection to fast‑track elite variety release.

During the on‑site assessment, the VC examined seed‑production fields, noting the successful scaling of pure‑line multiplication and the positive response of trial plots to new basmati cultivars. He lauded the centre’s commitment to maintaining genetic diversity while advancing agronomic performance.

Emphasizing farmer welfare, Prof. Tripathi urged that research outcomes translate into higher farm incomes and stronger livelihoods. He called for continuous investment in technology transfer and capacity‑building initiatives so that Jammu’s basmati retains its distinctive aroma and quality in global markets.
