India’s First Large‑Scale Hydrogen Train Set to Run in Haryana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially launch India’s first hydrogen‑fuel‑cell passenger train on July 17. The train will traverse the Jind‑Sonipat line on the Northern Railway zone, stopping at a host of intermediate points such as Jind City, Pandu Pindara Junction, Lalit Khera Halt, Bhumbeva, Isapur Khedi Halt, Buttana Halt, Khandarai Halt, Rabhra Halt, Lath Halt, Mohana, Barvasni Halt and Sonipat New.

What sets this train apart from existing diesel and electric models is its self‑contained energy generation. The PEM fuel‑cell converts stored hydrogen directly into electricity without combustion, delivering power to the traction motors. The only observable exhaust is water vapor, making the train virtually emission‑free at the point of use. By opting for a ten‑coach configuration, Indian Railways signals its intent to deploy hydrogen technology at scale, offering a viable alternative for high‑capacity, low‑emission passenger services across the country.
