India Leads BRICS Push for Community‑Based Climate Adaptation
New Delhi, August 18 – The twelfth BRICS environment ministers’ summit ended with a unanimous joint declaration that places community‑based climate adaptation at the core of the bloc’s agenda. The statement incorporates four result‑oriented documents, including a BRICS knowledge‑sharing network designed to accelerate research, innovation and best‑practice exchange among member institutions.
Among the key principles are integrated landscape management strategies to combat desertification, promote sustainable land use and enhance ecosystem resilience. The declaration also outlines a people‑centric, community‑driven adaptation framework that draws on traditional knowledge to strengthen fire preparedness, early warning and response mechanisms.
India’s Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister highlighted the launch of comprehensive compendia that compile the experiences, innovative approaches and indigenous wisdom of BRICS nations. He stressed that India’s chairmanship follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of prioritising Global South concerns and redefining BRICS as a platform for resilience, cooperation and forward‑looking innovation.
The minister called for inclusive progress that leaves no community behind, urging responsible innovation and a sustainability‑first development model. He emphasized that the BRICS knowledge network, technology exchange, training programmes and robust institutional partnerships can transform collective capacity into concrete climate action.
Addressing escalating global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and disaster risk, the minister appealed for stronger BRICS collaboration on fire prevention, preparation, response and post‑fire recovery, as well as on climate finance, adaptation and community empowerment. He cited initiatives like “Mission Life” and “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” as examples of ecological restoration combined with public participation and community ownership.
The minister also highlighted India’s enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution for 2031‑2035, which aims to drive climate action while supporting inclusive growth and energy security. Panel discussions and side events at the meeting reinforced the focus on people‑centric, community‑based adaptation and integrated landscape greening across BRICS nations.
