IOCL to Deliver Re‑Gasified LNG via Floating Storage Unit to Andaman Power Project

Indian Oil Corporation Ltd has been entrusted with the critical task of setting up the LNG supply chain for the Andaman‑Nicobar 55 MW power venture. The plan involves small LNG tankers navigating the Bay of Bengal, docking at a purpose‑built Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) positioned near Hopetown.

The FSRU will receive the liquid gas, convert it back to its gaseous state, and push it through a dedicated pipeline directly to the power plant. This approach sidesteps the need for land‑based storage facilities and aligns with the government’s objective of rapid de‑dieselisation of island electricity.

IOCL prepared the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan through the ‘Parivesh’ portal. Subsequent baseline studies were carried out between March and May 2023, after which IOCL engaged IndoMar Coastal Hydraulics Pvt Ltd to update the EIA and EMP based on both historic and newly gathered data.

The revised reports, validated by the expert committee of the MoEFCC, will form the basis for final clearances, paving the way for the FSRU‑linked LNG supply to commence.
