In a significant push to mobilize resources for road development, the government has shortlisted 1,692.5 km of national highways in nine states for monetization in fiscal 2026-27. The stretches, located in Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra, are considered high-value corridors with robust traffic flows. The monetization exercise will follow the established Toll-Operate-Transfer and Infrastructure Investment Trust routes, both of which have proven effective in drawing long-term investors. These frameworks allow the authority to lease operational highways to private players for a fixed period while ensuring continued maintenance and service quality. The selected assets deliberately exclude sections already earmarked for monetization under the Highway Infrastructure Investment Trust, avoiding overlap. Ministry sources emphasize that the program aligns with the national asset monetization policy aimed at recycling capital from existing infrastructure into new projects. The transparent bidding process is expected to give bidders sufficient lead time to conduct due diligence. Ultimately, the initiative is designed to strengthen connectivity, improve logistics efficiency, and support India’s economic growth trajectory.
