Pharma and PSU Bank Stocks Lead Gains on BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty
Tuesday’s trading session saw the BSE Sensex climb 286.98 points (0.37%) to 77,656.09 and the NSE Nifty 50 rise 116 points (0.48%) to 24,335.55, driven largely by robust performance in pharma shares and public‑sector banks.
The Sensex opened flat at 77,295.49, slipping 73.61 points from the prior close, but later surged to a high of 77,666.39, an intra‑day jump of 297.28 points (0.38%). The Nifty began at 24,175.75, a modest 0.17% dip, before rallying to an intra‑day peak of 24,334.55, up 115.5 points (0.47%).
Sectoral data showed Nifty Healthcare, Nifty Pharma and Nifty PSU Bank delivering the best returns, while Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Metal underperformed. Within the Nifty 50, the biggest gainers were Adani Enterprises, Max Healthcare, Apollo Hospitals, Indigo, Adani Ports, Shriram Finance, Infosys and Eternal. The laggards included HDFC Life, Cipla and ONGC.
Analysts attributed the upside to easing energy costs following a decline in crude oil prices, which helped curb inflationary pressure and improve sentiment toward defensive and domestically‑focused sectors. The expected U.S. sanctions on Iran did not materialise as strongly as anticipated, leading to lower oil prices and a fall in bond yields.
Looking forward, market participants await the release of inflation data later this week and remarks from the Federal Reserve Chair for guidance on rate outlook. The unresolved U.S.–Iran tension continues to keep oil prices and yields elevated, warranting a measured approach from investors.
