President Murmu Awards Padma Bhushan to Banking Pioneer Uday Kotak

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday presented the Padma Bhushan to Uday Kotak at Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Republic Hall, honoring his decades-long contribution to India’s financial services. Kotak, who established Kotak Mahindra Bank, is widely regarded as a self-made leader who entered the banking sector during India’s economic liberalization. In the early 1990s, when access to credit was limited and private players were rare, he launched Kotak Finance, offering services such as auto loans, investment banking, and brokerage. His success was rooted in a conservative yet forward-thinking approach, prioritizing ethical practices and measured risk-taking. Starting with a small loan of 30 lakh rupees sourced from close contacts, Kotak expanded his operations step by step, eventually building one of the country’s most respected private banks. The announcement of his Padma Bhushan was part of the annual Padma awards declared on the eve of Republic Day. This year, five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards were distributed, recognizing excellence across multiple fields. Among the business honorees, Ashok Khade of Das Offshore Engineering and Satyanarayan Nuwal of Solar Industries received Padma Shri for their contributions to shipping and defense manufacturing, respectively. A posthumous Padma Shri went to T.T. Jagannathan of Prestige for innovations in kitchen equipment. Kotak’s recognition highlights how individual determination and principled entrepreneurship can reshape an entire industry.
