Protest disruptions force Delhi retailers to scramble for staff pay

New Delhi, October 15 — Repeated protest actions in the heart of Delhi have placed severe strain on merchants who depend on daily foot traffic. Ayush Chopra, proprietor of the Bape Da Hotel and Meenar Restaurant, explained that a looming demonstration triggers a drop in visitors as early as four days in advance. The fear generated by online videos continues to deter shoppers even after the rally subsides, extending the sales slump.

"Fixed costs such as rent, electricity and staff salaries do not wait for the crowd to return," Chopra warned, adding that paying employees becomes increasingly difficult when income evaporates.

He emphasized that the problem is not exclusive to larger establishments; many small‑scale vendors report a dramatic reduction in orders, urging the government to allocate an alternative location for future protests beyond central Delhi.

Vijayesh Agrawal, who runs a Bengali sweets and pastry shop, confirmed that during the protest his turnover fell below 50 % of normal levels. He also cited road closures and traffic restrictions as additional hurdles that discouraged customers from reaching his store.

The protest, organised by a regional political party on October 10, resulted in the closure of several arterial routes across central Delhi. The ensuing gridlock impacted both large chains and family‑run outlets, leaving them to juggle rising operational costs against sharply reduced earnings.
