Rising Demand Boosts Polished Diamond Exports in India
India’s polished diamond exports recorded a notable rise in June 2026, climbing 8.7% to $84.67 million, according to data released on July 20. The increase follows a period of reduced shipments in earlier quarters, indicating a rebound in global demand for diamond jewellery.
During the April‑June window, total polished diamond exports fell 4.1% to $2.72 million, yet the sector still managed to ship 39.8 lakh carats at an average price of $681.7 per carat. The higher per‑carat price reflects stronger buying power in key overseas markets.
Overall gem and jewellery exports for the month reached $2.21 billion, up 26.5% YoY, while the fiscal year‑to‑date total hit $6.61 billion, a modest 0.04% rise.
Imports of raw diamonds declined sharply, with June’s gross import value at $70.03 million – a 32.4% year‑on‑year drop – and volume down 8.6% to 66.9 lakh carats. Indian manufacturers are trimming inventories amid lingering uncertainties in international markets.
The sector also benefited from a surge in gold jewellery exports, which jumped 54.5% to $1.09 billion, driven primarily by traditional designs. Silver and platinum pieces posted gains of 20%‑27% during the same quarter.
Analysts expect the upward trajectory to continue into the holiday season, especially as lab‑grown diamonds gain acceptance as a cost‑effective substitute for natural stones.
