In a major push for accountability, India's CCPA has penalized 31 coaching institutes with over Rs 1.39 crore in fines for running misleading ad campaigns. Over 60 notices were served to centers coaching for competitive exams including UPSC, JEE, NEET, and RBI tests, following complaints about exaggerated success rates. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs revealed that these institutes lured students with cherry-picked testimonials, photos of toppers, and bold guarantees of success, while hiding key facts like the actual programs selected by those achievers. This violates core consumer rights under the 2019 Act. Standouts in the penalty list include Motion Education Pvt Ltd, hit with Rs 10 lakh, and Sikar-based Career Line Coaching (CLC), fined Rs 5 lakh. CCPA's orders, issued under Nidhi Khare and Anupam Mishra, demand cessation of false ads and full disclosure in all promotions. Despite directives for immediate compliance, appeals have been filed at NCDRC by the offenders. The move underscores the government's commitment to protecting vulnerable students who pour resources into exam prep. As the coaching industry faces scrutiny, experts predict more reforms to curb hype-driven enrollments and foster genuine merit-based guidance. This enforcement not only recovers fines but sets a precedent, urging the sector to prioritize ethics over sensationalism and rebuild consumer confidence.
