SEBI Introduces INR-Based Fees to Simplify FPI & FVCI Processes

In a bid to streamline foreign investment compliance, SEBI has overhauled its fee regime for FPIs and FVCIs. The traditional dollar‑denominated charges are being phased out in favor of straightforward Indian‑rupee amounts.

The standard registration fee of $1,000 is now INR 90,000, and the Category‑I fee jumps to INR 230,000, replacing the earlier $2,500 benchmark. Late‑payment penalties and continuation fees have also been recalibrated.

All fees collected by the depository must be forwarded to SEBI within five working days post‑registration, ensuring timely receipt of revenues.

Moreover, the common application form now captures either the applicant’s birth date or the company’s formation date, a step taken to harmonise the process with CBDT’s recent simplification of PAN applications.

SEBI highlighted that during FY 2025‑26 it amassed roughly $13 million (including GST) from these fees. Switching to rupee‑based calculations aims to remove manual accounting burdens, improve real‑time invoicing, and eliminate reporting delays.
