Special Trading Session Marks New Hindu Fiscal Year on Nov 8
Mumbai, 8 November – The Indian equity market has been under pressure from global volatility, causing the Nifty to retreat about 4 % and the Sensex about 5 % between the Diwali festivals of 2025 and 2026.
A rebound of roughly 8.5 % in the past week helped narrow those losses.
During the Diwali‑to‑Diwali stretch, Nifty Pharma delivered the best performance with a near‑24 % return, while Nifty Metal posted a 23 % gain. Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Media also posted solid upside.
In contrast, Nifty FMCG dropped 18 %, making it the poorest sector, and Nifty IT, Nifty PSU and Nifty Financial Services were among the biggest laggards.
Within the Nifty 50, BSE shares outshone the rest with a 53 % rise. ShriRam Finance, Titan, Adani Ports and Tech Mahindra posted returns ranging from 25 % to 40 %, securing spots among the top gainers.
ITC suffered the steepest fall at 31 %, followed by Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, HDFC Life Insurance and Max Healthcare, which also recorded sizable declines.
Both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange will conduct a special trading session on 8 November between 2:20 pm and 3:30 pm, heralding the beginning of the new Hindu financial year.
Analysts note that eight of the last ten Muhurat sessions have been bullish, albeit with modest gains typically under 1 %.
