Strike by Bank Unions Targets Five‑Day Workweek, Affects Government Branches
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) organized a strike on Friday, September 11, to contest the implementation of a five‑day work week and to bring forward other unresolved issues. The coalition, composed of seven unions and covering about 90 percent of employees in public sector banks, led to the temporary closure or partial operation of many branches. Customers experienced interruptions in cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque clearing and routine paperwork. Nonetheless, all digital services – internet banking, mobile applications and UPI – remained fully functional. Bank of Baroda warned that its operations could be impacted but emphasized its commitment to provide essential services. Punjab National Bank similarly assured that it would make every effort to keep banking services normal and urged clients to use PNB One, UPI, mobile and internet banking, as well as other digital channels.
