Supply Gap Extends Beyond Chennai: Avin Milk Scarcity in Tamil Nadu Districts

While Chennai has drawn most of the media attention, the shortage of Avin's green milk packets is spreading across Tamil Nadu. Districts such as Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Salem and Erode have all reported reduced deliveries from the state cooperative.

Milk agents across these regions confirm that the number of crates dispatched to retail outlets has been cut, leading to empty shelves and long queues for the few remaining packets. The green packet, preferred for its fat content and consistency, is now sold out within hours of the store opening.

Consumers who cannot secure Avin milk are forced to purchase private dairy products at higher rates. This shift not only raises their grocery bills but also raises concerns about price parity, as the government‑mandated rate of 22 rupees per half‑litre is being undercut by private brands charging substantially more.

Local consumer groups are urging the government and Avin management to restore procurement levels and enforce the fixed price schedule, warning that continued scarcity could erode public confidence in the cooperative's ability to provide affordable nutrition.
