Tariff Cuts and Faster Customs Clearance Feature in NZ‑India FTA

New Zealand’s trade and investment minister detailed the key provisions of the India free‑trade agreement that Parliament approved on September 16. Once fully operational, 57 percent of Indian imports into New Zealand will be duty‑free, with the remaining 38 percent seeing sharply reduced rates.

The deal also promises streamlined border procedures, reducing clearance times for goods traveling between the two nations. McClay said this will benefit sectors such as agrifood, technology, professional services and tourism, where rapid market access is critical.

The agreement was announced in March 2025 and the government expects full implementation by the close of the current year. By eliminating most tariffs, the pact aims to double the value of bilateral trade by 2030, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
