University and College Network Expands by Over 60% Since 2014

The infrastructure of higher education in India has broadened considerably. Universities increased from 760 in 2014‑15 to 1,289 in 2023‑24, a rise of roughly 69.6 percent. Colleges grew from 38,498 to 48,246, marking a 25.3 percent expansion.

Autonomous institutions also added capacity, climbing from 12,276 to 15,221, a 24 percent increase. These numbers reflect a concerted effort by the Ministry of Education to widen the reach of tertiary education across the nation.
