World Bank Packages $5.5 Billion to Accelerate Household Solar in India

A comprehensive financing package worth approximately $5.5 billion has been cleared by the World Bank to boost India’s domestic solar market. The assistance combines public and private resources to offer low‑interest loans to homeowners, encouraging rapid deployment of rooftop solar panels.

The scheme is designed to address financing bottlenecks that have slowed rooftop adoption despite falling solar hardware costs. By leveraging commercial banks, the World Bank aims to make credit more accessible and affordable for families across both urban and rural areas.

The funding is expected to add several gigawatts of rooftop capacity in the coming years, directly supporting India’s target of 60 percent non‑fossil electricity generation by 2035 and its net‑zero ambition for 2070.

Stakeholders, including distribution companies, banks and solar vendors, are being prepared to handle higher transaction volumes and provide integrated services to consumers, ensuring a smoother rollout of rooftop installations.
