WPI Shows 9.92% Inflation in August 2026, Driven by Energy and Commodities

According to data released on Monday by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, wholesale price index inflation for August 2026 stood at 9.92 percent, slightly higher than the 9.78 percent recorded in July.

The composite WPI climbed to 110.8 in August from 110.0 the month before. Energy‑related items were the main engine, with the fuel and energy category surging to a 22.93 percent inflation rate, up from 20.05 percent in July, following a rapid rise in global crude oil prices.

Primary commodities experienced a slowdown, with inflation falling to 7.76 percent from 8.52 percent, whereas manufactured goods saw a marginal increase to 8.37 percent, up from 8.29 percent.

August index levels were 118.1 for primary articles, 108.3 for fuel and energy, and 108.8 for manufactured products. The food price index within the WPI also rose to 7.05 percent from 6.65 percent, highlighting ongoing pressure on food costs.

June’s provisional numbers were revised: the June WPI was adjusted to 110.3 and the June wholesale inflation rate to 9.97 percent. The Input Price Index for manufacturers recorded 104.2 for August, after June’s trial estimate was corrected to 105.9.
