In 2011, the long-awaited collaboration between India’s nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar, and Pakistani ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan finally materialized, albeit under unique circumstances. Despite their mutual admiration and a shared desire to work together, their duet, a song titled “Tera Milna Bahut Achcha Lage Hai,” was recorded virtually due to Hassan’s deteriorating health. The legendary singers never met in person to record the song, marking a poignant moment in music history.
Mehdi Hassan, battling a serious illness that had forced him into seclusion, composed a rough track and emailed it to Lata Mangeshkar. She then enlisted composer Mayuresh Pai to arrange the music. After the final composition, Lata Mangeshkar recorded her parts, transforming a solo track by Farhat Shahzad into a memorable duet. The resulting song resonated with a depth that transcended national boundaries, symbolizing the unity of two nations.
Mangeshkar reminisced about Hassan’s exceptional vocal talent, expressing her deep admiration and sorrow over his prolonged suffering. She recalled their first meeting in Canada and her presence at his Mumbai concert. She highlighted the bittersweet irony of their virtual collaboration, emphasizing Hassan’s only regret – not being able to sing with her. She remembered Hassan’s difficult last years and his dedication to his large family.
