He recounted arriving at the Toronto International Film Festival for the official selection of his debut English film, feeling excited and nervous about the world premiere.

After an early screening of “Monsoon Wedding," Vaswani and his colleague Ashutosh left the theatre at 10 a.m. to discover headlines announcing the terrorist attacks on New York’s World Trade Center, Washington’s Pentagon, and a crashed flight in Pennsylvania. The shock reverberated through the festival corridors, replacing applause with silence.

In a social media post that included a vintage photo with Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bose, Vaswani marked the 25th anniversary, noting that the world has changed dramatically but that the core lessons of that day remain unheeded.
