How a Single Mushaira Launched Majrooh Sultanpuri’s Career

A chance poetry recitation in 1945 changed the trajectory of Indian film music. Majrooh Sultanpuri, then an aspiring shayar from Sultanpur, captivated listeners at Bombay’s Saboo Siddiqui Institute. Among them was producer A.R. Kardar, who immediately sought out the young poet through Jigar Moradabadi and introduced him to Naushad. Their collaboration on Shahjahan opened the doors of Bollywood. From the 1950s onward Majrooh wrote for nearly every major composer, crafting romantic anthems and philosophical ballads alike. His socially conscious outlook often found expression in lyrics that balanced melody with meaning. Despite early hardships and a brief imprisonment for his leftist views, he maintained artistic integrity throughout his five-decade career. The same voice that once echoed in mushairas later filled cinema halls with songs that generations still hum today.
