How a Young Mahboob Khan Defied His Father to Create Mother India

In the early twentieth century, a determined teenager from rural Gujarat risked everything for a chance at the silver screen. Mahboob Khan’s father, alarmed by his son’s frequent disappearances to watch movies, once dragged him back from Mumbai and administered a harsh beating. Yet the punishment only strengthened the boy’s resolve to pursue cinema. After another escape to Mumbai, Mahboob Khan endured years of hardship, surviving on odd jobs and sleeping at Victoria Terminus. A chance meeting with Ardeshir Irani opened doors to bit roles, but he quickly shifted focus to writing and direction. His first film, Al Hilal, marked the start of a prolific career that included socially conscious dramas featuring strong female characters. By 1952 he had founded Mehboob Studios in Bandra, a facility still used today. The pinnacle of his work arrived with Mother India in 1957, a film that brought global attention to Indian storytelling and earned an Oscar nomination. Mahboob Khan’s influence on progressive themes and cinematic craft remains unmatched. He died in 1964, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire generations.
