From Lavani Stage to Silver Screen: The Life of Madhu Kambikar
Madhur Kambikar, an icon of Marathi cinema and Lavani performance, died on October 12 in Pune, aged 73. Her artistic journey began on the folk stages of Maharashtra, where her powerful Lavani dances earned her fame as a cultural ambassador of the state.
Transitioning to movies, Kambikar delivered unforgettable performances in landmark Marathi films such as "Hech Majha Maaher," "Yeu Ka Gharat," and "Ek Hota Vidushak." She also ventured into Hindi cinema, appearing in "Sutradhar" and the star‑studded "Shola Aur Shabnam."
A distinctive chapter of her career involved playing mother to Nana Patkar, despite being younger than him by roughly two years. Their joint appearances in "Ham Dono" and "Yashvant" are still cited as exemplary portrayals of on‑screen family dynamics.
In November 2016, while performing at Mumbai’s Yashvant Natya Mandir, Kambikar suffered a stroke that left her right hand paralyzed and forced her retirement from stage dancing. Her passing marks the end of an era for both Marathi cinema and the traditional art of Lavani.
