Actress Navya Nair was penalized USD 1,980 (approximately ₹1.14 lakh) at Melbourne International Airport while en route to Onam celebrations organized by the Malayali Association of Victoria. The incident unfolded due to Nair carrying a jasmine gajra, a small garland, in her bag. She shared the experience on her Instagram, adding a sarcastic caption in Malayalam. The garland, measuring only 15 cm, was in violation of Australian regulations regarding the import of plant materials. Nair was unaware of the restrictions and admitted her mistake, but stated it was unintentional. She has been given 28 days to pay the fine.
Nair explained that her father had purchased the jasmine garland and split it, advising her to wear one part during her journey from Kochi to Singapore. After that portion withered, he suggested she keep the other piece in her handbag for use at the airport. Unfortunately, she unknowingly violated the law. She is known for her performances in Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada films.
