New Film Centre and Renovated Uttam Mancha to Honor Bengali Legend
As part of the centenary celebrations for Uttam Kumar, the West Bengal government announced the construction of a state‑of‑the‑art film centre bearing his name. The centre will serve as a hub for cinema education, archival research, and cultural events.
Simultaneously, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has approved a major renovation of the Uttam Mancha, the traditional stage associated with Kumar’s performances. The upgraded venue will feature modern lighting, sound systems, and seating to accommodate larger audiences.
Actress Rituparna Sen Gupta, who chairs the Shilpi Sammilani, welcomed these developments. “Uttam Kumar’s artistry is unparalleled; preserving his legacy through such infrastructure is essential,” she remarked.
The initiatives are scheduled to launch during a series of programmes from September 3 to September 6, coinciding with Kumar’s birthdate.
