Siddheshwari Devi’s Musical Journey and the Padma Shri Honour

Over the decades, Siddheshwari’s reputation spread from royal courts to major music festivals across India. She appeared on All India Radio and later on Doordarshan, where audiences would stay up late to hear her renditions of thumri, khayal, dadra, kajri, chaiti, hori and devotional bhajans. The depth of feeling in her voice attracted admirers such as South Indian stalwart M. S. Subbulakshmi, who learned bhajan nuances from her. In recognition of her contributions, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 1966, the same year she received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Academic institutions followed suit, conferring an honorary D.Litt from Ravindra Bharati University and the ‘Deshikottam’ title from Visva‑Bharati.
