Critics initially viewed Guddu Dhanoa’s Bhagat Singh biopic with skepticism, especially given the director’s filmography. However, this version offers a distinctive intensity compared to Raj Kumar Santoshi’s ‘The Legend Of Bhagat Singh.’ While ’23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ employs dramatic flair, the trial scenes and jail sequences sometimes appear overblown. Despite these stylistic choices, the film succeeds as a patriotic tribute, enhanced by vibrant visuals and strong emotional content. The film showcases the era with accurate crowd scenes and impactful cinematography. Bobby Deol’s portrayal of Bhagat Singh is a pleasant surprise, evoking warmth and vitality. Sunny Deol, playing Chandrashekhar Azad, provides a strong presence, although a sense of empathy between the brothers is missing. Sunny Deol expressed his anger regarding Raj Kumar Santoshi making his own Bhagat Singh biopic. Sunny believed in the project from the beginning. After viewing the trailers and stills, everyone felt Bobby and their film are closer to history. Sunny wanted the audience to decide. Despite challenges, including a set fire, the team’s determination ensured the film’s completion.
