West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has called for a detailed police investigation into the mysterious death of celebrated filmmaker Anik Dutta. In a post on X, Adhikari described Dutta’s contribution to Bengali cinema as invaluable and offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. Dutta reportedly fell from the roof of his home in Kolkata’s Gariahat area and was taken to a private hospital in Dhakuria, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have secured the location and are collecting statements from local residents to clarify whether the incident was a tragic accident or something more suspicious. The film community has reacted with profound sorrow. Leading figures including actress Srilekha Mitra, actor Rudranil Ghosh, and director Arindam Sil have shared emotional tributes. Dutta first captured national attention with his 2012 satire Bhooter Bhabishyat, which offered sharp commentary on politics and society. Subsequent works such as Ashchorjyo Prodeep, Meghe Dhaka Tara, Barun Babur Bandhu, and Aparajito cemented his reputation, culminating in two National Awards last year. Throughout his career, Dutta remained a vocal critic of governance in West Bengal, making his loss deeply felt both culturally and politically.
