The Untold Journey of Nirupa Roy From Gujarati Roots to Amitabh Bachchan's Mother

Nirupa Roy’s story begins in the coastal town of Valsad, Gujarat, where she was born Kokila Kishorchandra Bulsara on 4 January 1931. Her family’s attitudes toward movies were discouraging, and she claimed in later interviews that she had never watched a single film before her wedding.

After marrying Kamal Roy, the couple relocated to Bombay, the burgeoning hub of Indian cinema. An advertisement in a Gujarati newspaper looking for aspiring artistes sparked their interest, and while both auditioned, the producer chose Nirupa for a role, launching her film career.

The year 1946 marked her dual debut: a Gujarati feature titled *Ranakdevi* and the Hindi picture *Amar Raj*. A defining moment arrived with the 1950 devotional film *Har Har Mahadev*, where she embodied Goddess Parvati. The performance earned her reverence that crossed the line between acting and worship, a phenomenon rarely seen in mainstream cinema.

Following years saw her transition from divine roles to the archetypal mother. The watershed moment was Yash Chopra’s *Deewar* (1975), where her portrayal of Amitabh Bachchan’s mother gave birth to one of Bollywood’s most quoted lines: “Mere paas maa hai.” The role propelled her into a series of motherly parts in films such as *Khwab Pishina*, *Maqbool ka Sikandar*, *Amar Akbar Anthony*, *Suhaag* and *Mard*.

By the time she retired, Nirupa Roy had contributed to more than 200 films, earning a reputation for depth, dignity, and devotional grace. Filmfare honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, a year that also marked her departure from the world on 13 October. Her journey from a non‑cinema‑familiar Gujarati household to the mother of Bollywood’s biggest stars remains a testament to her talent and perseverance.
