Upasana Kamineni Konidela, wife of South Indian superstar Ram Charan and a prominent entrepreneur, has ignited a vital discussion surrounding women’s choices to freeze their eggs to prioritize their careers. Following online backlash, Upasana took to her X account to clarify her stance, expressing gratitude for the ‘healthy debate’ and promising to delve deeper into the nuances of privilege.
She emphasized that her decision to freeze her eggs was not about privilege but a personal right, allowing women greater control over their life choices. Upasana shared a series of questions challenging societal pressures, asking if it’s wrong for women to marry for love, delay childbirth based on their circumstances, or focus on career development before settling down.
In a detailed fact-check, Upasana revealed she married at 27 and froze her eggs at 29 for personal and health reasons, openly advocating for other women to explore this option. She highlighted that she welcomed her first child at 36 and is now expecting twins at 39, underscoring her commitment to balancing career and family. She firmly stated, “For me, marriage and career are not competing priorities — they are equally meaningful parts of a fulfilled life. But I decide the timeline! That’s not privilege; it’s my right!!!”
Previously, Upasana had spoken at a Hyderabad event about egg freezing as a form of ‘insurance’ for women, enabling them to choose their timelines for marriage and childbirth, particularly when financially independent. The couple, married in 2012, welcomed their daughter in 2023 and are reportedly expecting twins soon, with Upasana announcing her pregnancy during Diwali.
