A stunning achievement in India's organ donation landscape: Ahmedabad Civil Hospital revealed on Friday that it has coordinated 1,032 organ and tissue donations from deceased donors over the last six years. This positions the institution as one of the country's foremost hubs for such life-affirming initiatives. Spotlighting a recent case, Mehsana resident Dharmendra Darbar, a 29-year-old driver, succumbed to injuries from a May 4 road crash near Kadi. Brain dead by May 14 despite valiant treatment at Civil Hospital by Dr. Jitu Parikh's team, his family's decision post-counseling by P.S. Patel, Mahendrabhai Jhala, and Lalsinh Jhala led to the donation of his liver and both kidneys, benefiting three patients in dire need. Dr. Rakesh Joshi, Medical Superintendent, detailed the numbers: 240 donors yielded 794 organs, complemented by 194 eye and 44 skin donations for 238 tissues—summing to 1,032. Specific transplants include 443 kidneys, 214 livers, 76 hearts, 34 lungs, 19 pancreases, 6 hands, and 2 small intestines. This surge reflects heightened awareness and trust in deceased donation programs. Officials note that these transplants have been pivotal for patients battling organ failure, fostering a culture of giving that resonates nationwide. 'Every donation is a legacy of love,' Dr. Joshi remarked, highlighting how such acts bridge the gap between death and renewed life. The hospital's success story inspires broader adoption of organ pledging across Gujarat and beyond. Meanwhile, Gujarat's state government boosted stipends for Siddhpur Dental College interns to Rs 20,160 monthly from Rs 12,000. Minister Pratul Pansheriya affirmed this honors their dedication during internships, packed with clinical responsibilities. Prompted by the college's plea to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the hike ensures fair compensation for future dentists shaping healthcare.
