Effective immediately, the sale of loose, unpackaged spices in public markets, roadside stalls and near waste dumps is prohibited across Maharashtra. Commissioner Munje explained that spices must be stored in clean, dry locations away from chemicals, artificial dyes or any toxic material.
Every spice manufacturer, distributor, retailer and hotel operator is required to hold a valid licence and to train staff on safety protocols. Packaging must display clear labels indicating ingredients, origin and any processing details. The move aligns with the state’s broader "Safe Food, Safe Drugs" campaign and is intended to eliminate contamination risks for households.
