India is bracing for one of its most intense heat spells as Nautapa, the traditional nine-day period of extreme temperatures, gets underway. Meteorologists predict sustained highs above 45°C through early June, prompting fresh advisories from health organisations. The World Health Organization has highlighted that even brief lapses in caution can trigger life-threatening conditions such as heat exhaustion and dehydration. Simple measures like carrying water bottles, wearing breathable fabrics and planning outdoor activities for early morning or late evening can make a significant difference. Health workers are particularly concerned about urban populations who may underestimate the danger while commuting or working outdoors. They recommend creating cool indoor environments using fans and closing curtains during the hottest hours. Nutrition also plays a key role. Light meals rich in water content, such as fruits and salads, help maintain electrolyte balance. Sugary drinks, alcohol and excessive tea or coffee should be avoided because they increase fluid loss. Communities are being encouraged to check on elderly neighbours and ensure pets have access to shade and water. Early recognition of warning signs—rapid heartbeat, nausea or confusion—can prevent fatalities during this critical stretch.
