Bound Lotus Pose: Yoga for Flexibility, Digestion and Spine

Yoga offers a range of postures that support both physical and mental well-being. One of these is Baddha Padmasana, or the bound lotus pose. It is regarded as an advanced form of Padmasana and is known for improving flexibility while building strength in the shoulders, back, and joints.

To perform the pose, the legs are placed in the lotus position and the hands are tied behind the back. 'Baddha' translates to bound, while 'padma' means lotus. The posture is considered useful for enhancing body stability, balance, and flexibility.

According to the Ayush Ministry of the Government of India, the asana is significant for physical firmness as well as for deep mental tranquility and spiritual awakening. Regular practice gently stretches the back muscles and improves blood circulation through the spine, supporting long-term spinal health.

Ayush experts add that lying down in this pose places a mild pressure on the stomach area. This may help improve digestion and ease problems such as constipation, indigestion, and gas. The practice is also said to influence mental clarity and energy levels in a meaningful way.

Yoga science describes prana, the vital life force, as flowing through the nadis of the body. When the legs lock in Baddha Padmasana and the hands bind behind, an energy circuit is formed. The energy stays within the body, circulating and activating the chakras. This is believed to make the movement of energy from Muladhara to Sahasrara smoother, creating a sense of lightness and vitality. For this reason, the pose is often considered ideal for meditation.

Because the asana requires a great deal of flexibility, practitioners should first gain mastery of Padmasana before attempting it.
