The Democratic Republic of Congo is now grappling with its most severe Ebola episode on record. Recent WHO data show 3,605 confirmed cases of the Bundibugyo strain, with 1,587 deaths – a case‑fatality rate of roughly 44 percent. The outbreak, originally confined to the Ituri province’s Mongbwalu health zone, has spread to 49 health areas across five provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, T‑Uele and Shabunda. Health‑worker infections have risen sharply, with 151 staff affected and 44 fatalities, underscoring gaps in infection‑prevention practices within treatment facilities.
