Surat’s New Civil Hospital has upgraded its newborn ward with a high‑technology RFID monitoring solution. The system, installed outside the NICU, reads tags attached to each baby’s wrist. Any attempt to exit the unit without proper clearance triggers an alarm that activates a dedicated security response team. According to senior medical officer Dr. Lakshman, the adoption of this technology follows previous incidents of infant theft, prompting the hospital to act decisively. The facility now accommodates 42 NICU beds and a total of 60 beds for children referred from across south Gujarat and adjacent Maharashtra, all supervised by a specialized NICU team available round the clock.
