National Campaign ‘Jugg Jugg Jiyo’ Launched to Boost Organ Donation Awareness

On August 3, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare unveiled the “Jugg Jugg Jiyo” campaign during the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day celebrations in New Delhi. The year‑long, nation‑wide drive aims to carry the organ‑donation message into every corner of the country, targeting schools, workplaces and religious institutions.

Health Minister Anupriya Patel emphasized that myths and misconceptions continue to hinder donor registration, but noted that no major religion opposes organ donation. She urged citizens of all faiths to view donation as a noble act of compassion and service.

The campaign coincides with the launch of the e‑Transplant digital platform and a new NTRM mobile app. Together, they promise a transparent ecosystem for donor registration, waiting‑list management and organ allocation, linking hospitals, doctors, donors and recipients through a single network.

Alongside the awareness push, the ministry released two important policy documents: the National Brain‑Stem Death Certification Guidelines and the Swap‑Transplant Guidelines. These standards are intended to harmonise procedures across states and improve the efficiency of organ‑sharing programmes.

India’s transplant numbers underline the campaign’s urgency. In 2025, 20,138 organs were transplanted—a record that places the country third worldwide after the United States and China. Live‑donor transplants remain a comparative advantage, while deceased‑donor procedures have surged from 837 in 2013 to 3,526 in 2025.

The event also highlighted the expansion of the NTRM‑ROTT‑SOT network to all 31 states and union territories, and announced that ten new AIIMS centres have started kidney, liver and heart transplant services. Awards were presented to Tamil Nadu for the highest number of deceased donors and to PGIMER Chandigarh for excellence in ROTT operations. The day ended with a tribute to the families of departed donors.
