Trataka for Focus, Better Sleep and Reduced Stress
New Delhi, October 26: With minds crowded by hundreds of thoughts every day, focus and inner peace have become rare. Trataka, a centuries-old practice from Hatha Yoga, offers a gentle method to steady the mind and improve rest.
In this practice, a person sits in a calm setting and gazes at a single fixed point, such as a lamp flame, a chosen object, an idol, or a symbol, without blinking. The discipline of steady gazing is the core of Trataka.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH of the Government of India, Trataka is an important yogic exercise that benefits mental clarity and eye health. Its regular practice is associated with better eyesight, improved sleep, and a calmer mind.
Trataka is also known as an ancient cleansing technique. It is not limited to the eyes. It is meant to concentrate the mind, awaken mental energy, and lead the practitioner toward lasting inner calm.
The practice is especially useful for reducing insomnia, stress, and the flood of unnecessary thoughts. Often, the events of the day replay in the mind at night and disturb sleep. During Trataka, focusing on a lamp flame can help the mind relax step by step. The eye nerves are directly linked to the brain, and continuous observation of a flame is believed to activate melatonin, which aids deep sleep. Reports suggest that people who practice Trataka for 10 minutes daily need sleeping pills less frequently.
Do not perform intense techniques like Surya Trataka, or practice while wearing glasses or during night hours, without the guidance of a qualified guru. If eye burning or any serious issue arises, discontinue the practice at once.
