Tura’s district hospital expands with NICU and SNCU, total beds now 150

Meghalaya — Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma presided over the opening of an expanded wing at the Tura District Maternity and Child Hospital on Monday, adding 50 beds and bringing the hospital’s capacity to 150.

Key features of the new wing include Garo Hills’ first public Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), an advanced Special Neonatal Care Unit (SNCU), an independent oxygen plant and residential quarters for medical staff.

During his address, Sangma highlighted how the expansion will provide prompt, specialised care to mothers and infants in the region, reducing the necessity for patients to seek treatment outside the hills.

He cited recent improvements in maternal health metrics, noting that the maternal mortality ratio has fallen from 244 to 107 per 100,000 live births in the past five years. The development supports the state’s “Mission 1000‑Day” programme, which focuses on comprehensive health and nutrition services from pregnancy to the child’s second year.

The CM described the upgraded facility as a critical addition to Meghalaya’s public‑health network, complementing ongoing projects aimed at better connectivity, infrastructure and livelihood prospects for Garo Hills communities.
